This is an area that wasn't so nice from the 70's through the late 90's... It seems to be on the up-and-up for now, although I think that story is still playing out. Either way, we got the place cheap enough (we paid about $110k below the developer's original price) that if the "revitalization" doesn't seem to be happening after a couple of years, we should still be able to sell it for the price that we paid. In the mean time, it should be nice living near the water, and it will be good to get the tax breaks that come with making payments on a mortgage. And our mortgage payments will be less that we've both been paying for rent recently. More on all of this later!
Here are some pictures of our home (from when the Boston Globe reported on the auction... I don't think they're particularly good, so I'll bring the camera next time and hopefully we'll be able to post some better ones soon!)

Congratulations Dave and Jess! I'm very happy for you. The pictures were great - your new home looks like a nice one. Jess, I'm the aunt (Sharon's sister) that lives in Tennessee. I've heard nothing but nice things about you from everyone and I'm looking forward to getting to meet you too. Again, congratulations you two. Aunt Jane
Wow, that's huge..congrats guys! We'll have to come out and see your new place. When are you moving in?
Thanks a lot, Aunt Jane. I am very excited about this and looking forward to meeting you, too. It is really out of our expectation.
Thanks a lot, Shawn. April 8 is the closing date and we are planning to move in at the end of April. You and Heather should definitely come over and stay with us. Also, we are very close to the airport.
WOW!!! That's so exciting. Congratulations to both of you. Looking forward to seeing the new place. I am wondering if Dave is sad about finally leaving the house he's been in for so long! Take care, Heather.
Thanks for the comments everyone,
I'm still having a hard time getting used to all of this. I can't believe we'll be shopping for a washer and dryer over the next few weeks!
Yes, Heather, it will be really sad to leave my place in Newton Centre (I probably don't even know how sad yet), but it's also good to move forward. But I told my landlord that he should definitely let me know if he ever decides to sell the place!
We're going to the new place tomorrow to take some measurements for furniture, etc. It will be the first time we've been there since the auction (the auction wasn't actually there, it was in downtown Boston). Hopefully, it will be a nice day and we'll be able to get some pictures of our unit (which wasn't actually shown in the Globe article).
